The future has a lot of changes for our characters on Not Dead Yet Season 2 Episode 8, “Not You Yet.” It may make Nell a mom someday. It will definitely see Sam stop being a wife.
Though this is the first time in a few episodes that we’ve mentioned Sam’s separation and it’s a bit surprising to see this plot point return with such finality, neither of these developments is much of a shock.
Thanks largely to her friends, including a very overdue reappearance by Cricket, Sam is pretty chill about announcing this life-changing news. She lets them drag her out for drinks and even flirts with a main purely for the sake of a little action.
True, it does wind up with a typical “crying in the bathroom” scene, but even this is mostly played for laughs. All that means we’re likely to see some more resonant fallout soon. Good thing Nell’s practicing being more responsible.
She’s doing so because the preparations to freeze her eggs means she has to go on a month-long health kick. It’s not great timing when you want to support your best friend with lots of drinks and cheap bar food.
Neither Nell nor Sam is very successful at their attempt at trading roles, but their support of each other’s bravery is touching. In being willing to take on this work, Nell solidifies her resolve to have children. Sadly, it’s not one TJ shares.
Though it’s sad to see the potential with TJ end as quickly as it started, the loss is a necessary one. And what a welcome relief to see characters on TV actually talk about these kinds of deal-breakers from the start, instead of when a relationship is long established.
Speaking of established relationships, if there’s anything in this half hour that is scandalous, it has to be the new stage Lexi and Edward have reached. The one that involves gift giving and letting parents know that they’re official.
Okay, so “parents” only means Duncan, but dealing with his reaction is worth at least a couple awkward dinners with two sets of potential in-laws. He immediately demands Edward win him over as being worthy of his daughter (and himself.)
This is Duncan we’re talking about, so that’s less about Edward proving his love and more about him throwing an arcade game. But the younger man demonstrates his feelings anyway and, in another small moment of progress, Duncan eventually offers goodwill in exchange.
I’d never have guessed that either Lexi or Edward would have the most stable relationship on the show, but here we are. The closing scenes of the episode do at least help assure us that everyone will be okay, even if Sam is on her own and Nell and TJ are just friends.
The show is yet to be renewed, so there may be a very limited answer to what comes next for these characters. If we do get to spend more time with everyone, it’ll be interesting to see what they take on in their lives—and what the ghosts have to say about it.
