Both Duncan and TJ return on Not Dead Yet Season 2 Episode 6, “Not Going Home Yet.” With a “news-valanche” of breaking stories, all hands are on deck.
Dennis, of all people, takes the lead, and eventually sends Duncan to “fix” a copier that hasn’t been used in ages. Sam (of all people) is sent to supervise and actually winds up commiserating with his feelings of being outdated.
Nell is also stuck at the office to memorize two ambulance-chasing lawyers and thus finds herself unable to avoid Lexi, who has already been encroaching into her home life while dating Edward. She rallies some support from TJ, even if it takes a while to heed his advice.
It’s disconcerting to see both Dennis ordering the office around and Duncan being the most human we’ve ever seen him. True, Dennis has handled pressure when forced on air before, but it’s another level to learn he’s apparently always had managerial expertise we’ve never seen.
As for Duncan, this new side of him also comes in an episode where we almost never see him with his daughter. It probably speaks to how much or little progress he’s really making as a father, but his bonding scene with Sam is still rather sweet.
With Duncan being an “old-timer” and Sam working for the lifestyle section, they help each other overcome feeling unneeded when the newsroom is at its peak. Maybe Sam can also help Duncan pass some of this sentiment to his daughter, but I won’t hold my breath.
I wish we had a little more time to explore Sam’s side of things. Her feelings at work must at least be bolstered by the emotions that come with being separated from her husband. We haven’t even mentioned that since it happened.
Our ghost(s) of the week are again relegated to offering only passing commentary, but Nell already has enough to deal with. Now if only she could deal with them by actually sticking to boundaries the way TJ encourages her to.
I still don’t quite know what this thing between Edward and Lexi is, and this episode makes it clear that they don’t either. They are having a lot of sex as they try to figure it out—and they’re having it right outside Nell’s room.
It’s not entirely clear how this motivates her to intervene with them, or what her goal is in doing so. She may be better off continuing to try to avoid them, as the advice she offers instead leaves them both paranoid about each other’s feelings.
Somehow, all ends well. Nell gets her space in light of her friends mostly trying to ignore her as they explore what comes next. And she gets a chance to bond with TJ, officially sealing his status as a potential love interest.
It’s nice to see everyone on relatively good terms (even if they have to go through each other to get there). Though this is Nell’s story, it feels more and more like an ensemble based show, and I’m looking forward to seeing the dynamics continue to grow.
